1999/08/20 | Hi from John Chambers. I and Eric Mrozek have been passed copies of Dan's work on the O'Neill's Project, which he hasn't been able to keep going properly. You are now looking at my copy of it all, which I'm busily trying to get organized so that it works on this machine. Stay tuned ... |

1998/1/14 | Added some more files to the files page, and am working hard to get that progress chart back shipshape. I think it is just about right.. There are still a few tune blocks "MIA" right now, so I am going to send out emails to some of the people with large blocks of tunes to consider re-opening to the waiting transcribers. If you have any tunes that you (for any reason) might not be able to move forward on, please just send them in. Any contributions are welcome, and we all have other things that crop up that demand more attention sometimes. |
1997/12/05 | I updated the Q&A page to a threaded newsgroup-like html forum. Check it out, and please post questions & thoughts here. |
1997/11/22 | Several things to note- first of all, added 900-950, 1476-1555, and 1701-1780. Second of all, I am looking to get a Majordomo or listserve package set up so we can coordinate our efforts for the rapily approaching second wave of the project- getting styles and keying techniques more closely in line with each other. If anyone is able to run a listserver at their isp, please email me (dan@celticmusic.com) and let me know. Finally, I need to do some clean-up work to determine how much of the oustanding tune blocks that have been claimed and not turned in are actually underway.. I have a number of potential helpers, but most would prefer not to transcribe airs. |
1997/11/20 | Expect a large news update & some files soon.. In other news, I have a secret for all of you to share- I have an uncredited CD in new release in Walgreens! It is called "Celtic Quest", and consists of fairly rudimentary cuts from our band that are mixed with nature sounds :) Anyway, no one should buy it, but please point and giggle if you find yourself in Walgreens (which is a US Pharmaceuticals discounter!). |
1997/10/4 | Two more files added belatedly. We are really doing well here! |
1997/9/4 | Another 100 reels available in the files section- we are doing really well here. In other news, I have progressed a bit further on the CGI O'Neill-o-matic program to display the tunes online.. Should be pretty neato when completed. I am also considering a stand- alone executable multimedia program that would run on Macintosh or PC compatibles to display/play the tunes without using abc software. Could be handy for archives or libraries to use. The creation of the multimedia files is really easy (a script to produce each tune to a graphic or midi file, for example), so really all that would need doing is design and interface. Should be a hoot! |
1997/8/4 | Two more batches of tunes are up in the status section.. we have now collected 25% of the tunes! Please let me know how things are going as you progress, and we can start to think about timing/planning the initial release. |
1997/7/5 | Some questions lately made me think a bit about the
release schedule.. There are many strange anomolies
in the transcriptions that seem to beg obvious corrections.
I wanted to release the first version of the
book with all the errors intact to make this valuable to
even the most pure of the purists. My intention all along
was that the next phase (a 2.0 release?) would be making
all of the obvious corrections (with notes, of course)
and perhaps even taking a stab at which of the modal key
signatures each tune belongs in ("Banish Misfortune" would
make sense as Dmixolidian, for example).
So here is my advice- if you see a mistake in the transcription, please make a note in the abc file (a Z: field), but leave the error intact. Don't worry about going back and removing corrections from existing transcriptions- just make a note in the Z: field. |
1997/6/25 | I'm starting out with a really (REALLY) rudimentary message board page, a news section that speaks more directly to volunteers, and jumplinks to the progress report and keying standards pages. Oh yes- also the ABC files submitted so far! |
