This directory is my first attempt at transcribing all of John Walsh's "A Composite Musical Volume". This is now somewhat a relic, as the collections have been merged in the JohnWalsh directory. This directory should disappear eventually.
This is an ABC transcription of tunes from archive.org's copy of the document
A Composite Musical Volume,
from the collection of John Glen (1833-1904). It was published by J. Walsh in London, in 1748.
It is a combination of several small music/dance booklets from
the early 1700s, including:
This combined publication is in the archives at the
National Library of Scotland.
The tunes here were accompanied with brief dance descriptions, which I've also transcribed. These descriptions use some unusual symbols between the dance phrases that are difficult to reproduce in plain text. They all consist of arrangements of dots and lines, and have been transcribed as mixtures of periods (.), colons (:) and vertical bars (|), so that when rotated 90 degrees they resemble the original symbols.
